In August 1965, a new generation of the luxury class was presented with the 250 S, 250 SE and 300 SE models, which were to succeed the W 111 and W 112 tail fin models. Common to all three models was a body drawn by Paul Bracq, whose lines were based on the coupé of the W 111 series. These models marked the beginning of the tradition of the luxury coupé setting a new style direction for the Mercedes-Benz brand.

The technical concept of the new models largely corresponded to that of their predecessors, although new engines were introduced in addition to the new body. A revised version of the model series was offered from January 1968. The changes included the engine range, the interior and the design of the steering column.

In the film “Octopussy”, a 250 SE sedan is stripped down by Bond.
