The convertible bestseller with a Porsche engine

Again analogous to the sedan, the 1302 LS Cabriolet makes way for the 1303 model. The Beetle finds its final stage of development in the 1303 model – apart from a clamping strip for the hood seal, not a single screw or sheet metal corresponds to the first Beetle. This Beetle Convertible is a conversion with a Porsche engine (Type 4 Boxer engine) and sports conversion.

In the course of its history, the convertible is always adapted to the development of the sedan: All changes to technology and bodywork are also found in the Cabriolet, and on the engine side, the most powerful performance level is regularly used. The 1303 LS Cabriolet delivers 50 hp from 1,600 cc, while the curved, forward-drawn windshield and the padded dashboard are responses to the increased safety requirements, particularly in the USA. When sales of the limousine were discontinued in Germany in 1975, production numbers skyrocketed – to a total of around 160,000 units.

On January 10, 1980, an era finally comes to an end with the last Beetle 1303 LS Cabriolet to roll off the production line: After a total of 331,847 Cabriolets and 31 years of production, the Beetle says goodbye to the open-top variant.
